5.6. Strata Control

Strata stability is one major common issues throughout all APP countries, demanding to be dealt with substantial technological improvements, particularly in deep and high stress mining environments. A number of options have been suggested in this report to meet current and future needs.

Current leading technologies successfully developed and applied in some of APP countries include:

  • retained goaf edge roadway support

  • high capacity support

  • numerical modelling and stability analysis

  • strata and support monitoring.

R & D requirements to address the gaps in strata control technology and to meet future needs in APP countries include:

  • supports for deep and high stress mining conditions

  • an integrated system of continuous strata stability monitoring and early warning

  • subsidence reduction.

Most of the current leading technologies are in practice at the coal mines in Australia. It is therefore suggested that these technologies be transferred among APP countries through collaborative demonstration projects.

China is facing the challenges to control strata in its deep coal mines of high stress conditions. Australia will face the challenges in the near future. It is therefore recommended that the future R & D projects should focus on deep mine supports, integrated strata monitoring system and subsidence reduction.
