3.2. Canada

Multiple seams longwall extraction has operated in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia. Typically the overlying Harbour Seam was mined in earlier years followed by the underlying Phalen Seam. Phalen Colliery ceased operation in 1999. A significant amount of mining occurred under the Atlantic Sea in both of these seams from 1924 until final closure. The bulk of Canadian coal mining is by surface mining. The two remaining underground coal mines use Bord and Pillar methods with some pillar extraction.
